Back in in 1973 a doctor made a passing remark when asked 'How many times can you regenerate?' he said '12, then we die' now fast forward to 2013 and the spin-off show 'The Sarah Jane Adventures' where the current doctor 'Matt Smith' is asked 'How many times can you regenerate?' and the doctor says a really random number '507 times' making out that he is immortal or that he lied back in 1973...
Today on 4th August at 7:00pm (British Time) on a BBC live show the 12th doctor shall be announced to huge fandom excitement....
But will this regeneration be the last we see on our screens? I think the BBC and the creators of Dr Who are crapping themselves about the remark made back in 1973 (they never expected there to ever be 12 doctors) now the 12th is being announced and they need to come up with a solution...
Now being of the generation who started watching when 'Christopher Eccleston' took control close to 9 years ago (I was 10) I've grown to love this show and have looked forward to seeing each new regeneration...my parents on the other hand have watched the show since it first began all those years ago and well when I asked them they didn't mind if the 12th doctor would be the last because they watched the show when the remark was made in 1973 so believe the creators should stay loyal...
It's safe to say that if the show ends in another 4 years or so (give the 12th some screen time like Tennant & Smith) that the BBC will lose a very lucrative money making franchise, you can't go into any toy shop without seeing Dr Who toys and merchandise on almost every shelf and they take the show and props on tour around England (I went once in Manchester)...Will the BBC stay loyal to older fans or find a way for the doctor to trick death and continue regenerating on our screens for years to come???
Here's how I think the 12th doctor should go down (some fans also think the same) tell the audience or let us believe that the 12th regeneration will be the last then surprise us with a twist just as he's about to die...
I and many other fans would love to see the doctor react to the mortality issue at hand since he can't make any more jokes about regenerating, it will take the doctor on a more emotional journey as he knows death could strike at any time...then in the final episode have him die then regenerate and not know how he's cheated death...(remember Billie Piper absorbed the Tardis inside her and the doctor swallowed it to save her life, Jack became unable to die so how about if some of the Tardis is still inside the doctor and the 13th regeneration could be him dealing with the mystery...)
Either way I'm looking forward to the announcement later today and will update my TV News Blog when the actor or actress is revealed...
